SPRING, 2007.
At twenty-six, Alicia Canales Forten is feeling totally suffocated by her pre-written life path. She’s navigating a long-distance relationship, living at home under her mom's strict rules, and grinding to save up for a wedding to a guy who’s going to be a doctor. But after venturing out one night in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, she gets completely hooked by the main-character energy of the neighborhood’s thriving creative crowd—and decides to make a move.
Nobody embodies that vibe more than La Garza, an iconic, up-and-coming fashion designer whose legendary house parties are local lore. Alicia is watching her whole life unfold from across the street, obsessed with the fearless, unapologetic lifestyle she’s never allowed herself to dream of.
Then, Alicia’s wealthy banker cousin moves into the neighborhood, and she gets pulled into the super unstable, chaotic orbits of both him and La Garza.
Set against the backdrop of a historic election and an impending global economic crash, Last Night in Brooklyn dives into the dark side of chasing the American Dream while navigating race, class, and gentrification right before a massive cultural shift. It’s an absolute masterclass on everything money can buy—and the quiet destruction of the stuff it can't.
